Located in Durg district, 14 kilometers south of Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, “Floating Wings Swimming Academy” is a well-known academy that has produced a remarkable group of young athletes. Today, over 35 young swimmers from Purai village, known as the "sports village" of Chhattisgarh, will have the opportunity to train at the International Swimming Pool in Raipur. The Sports Authority of India has taken up the responsibility of training these talented athletes, who will be representing their village, state, and country on the national and international stage. With their hard work and dedication, they will undoubtedly make their families, community, and country proud.
known as "Khelgram", is home to a remarkable legacy of sporting talent, with children aged between 6 and 30 years excelling in various sports such as football, kho-kho, kabaddi, and swimming. In fact, it's not uncommon to find a national player in almost every household in Purai, earning it the reputation as a sports village.
Before 2009, there was only one swimmer from Purai, Yagyawal Ojha. However, his nephew Om Ojha brought international recognition to the village through his achievements in swimming. Om Ojha, a national swimmer and coach, established the “Floating Wings Swimming Academy” after years of dedication and perseverance. His love for swimming inspired many young people in Purai to start swimming. The academy, under his guidance, has trained several talented swimmers who have gone on to win national and international competitions. Today, the academy is a source of pride for the village, helping to develop the next generation of swimming champions.
Mr. Om Kumar Ojha’s passion for swimming ignited at age 12 after watching his uncle compete in the "Swimming State Championship, in Bilaspur." Inspired by his uncle's success, Om excelled in school swimming competitions, winning first place in 200, 400, and 500 meters. By 2010, he dedicated himself to swimming and began learning and teaching techniques in his village.
Despite initial resistance, Om's perseverance led to the formation of the "Floating Wings" Swimming Association in Purai. He trained his sister, who won medals and helped break barriers for female swimmers. Under his leadership, Floating Wings has become a thriving hub for young swimmers.
